SAE Automotive Workforce Development
A Performance Racing Article Summary by Paris Van Gorder

SAE History

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), founded in 1905, had its origins in aiding the automobile industry by providing a platform for sharing design issues and establishing engineering standards for engineers and suppliers. Over time, SAE expanded its focus to serve as a forum where industry professionals could address specific issues, they encountered during the production process. Although the original educational involvement dated back to Cornell University in 1915, in the 1970s, SAE recognized the advantages of creating a formalized program to provide engineering students with practical, real-world training. In response to this need Baja SAE was created

Collegiate Competitions

Baja SAE and Formula SAE are two distinct competitions that challenge teams to design, develop and race vehicles. Baja SAE requires teams to construct a single-seat dune buggy, while Formula SAE tasks teams with creating a formula-style open wheel race car. Both competitions mandate that teams create a cost analysis and present a business proposal. The cars produced are evaluated based on design, construction, performance, and cost, providing a comprehensive learning experience for students interested in race car engineering. Through these competitions, students are encouraged to consider production feasibility when developing their cars, providing a clear path for future career prospects in developing passenger cars or motorsports.

SAE Collegiate Impact

Since its establishment, the Formula SAE program has gained a substantial fan base. Consequently, the organizers have limited participation to 120 teams worldwide. Then in 2013, SAE implemented Formula EV as a new class in the Formula SAE program with support from volunteers within the industry. This class followed a structure similar to the standard Formula SAE competition, however, the four-stroke ICE powertrain was replaced by a fully electric one. The competition evaluates cars based on their design, construction, performance, and cost, taking into account the overall package. Participation in this competition can open doors for students, not only for future careers in developing road-worthy passenger cars but also for significant positions within the motorsports industry.

SAE International is also further broken down to state sections. These sections such as SAE Florida focus on supporting collegiate teams within their state and serve as a valuable resource for students interested in pursuing careers in the engineering and automotive industries. By providing access to networking opportunities, job postings, and industry events, SAE Florida and other state sections help students gain practical experience and make meaningful connections with professionals in their field. In addition to supporting collegiate teams, SAE International and its state sections also play a crucial role in promoting diversity and inclusion within the industry. Through initiatives such as the A World in Motion program, which introduces elementary and middle school students to STEM concepts and careers, SAE is working to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators from all backgrounds.

Within the Article, Don White, University of North Florida’s Osprey Racing teams Mentor states “The students get educated in the classroom, but they learn by doing the Formula SAE program. I think of it as almost like a ‘Shark Tank’ of formula race car design, if you will. You have dynamic events that are on track, but you also have these static events that are off track, like the business case and the cost report, that really encourage these teams to think about production feasibility when they’re designing these cars.”

Overall, SAE International and its state sections are an essential part of the engineering and automotive communities, providing valuable resources, support, and opportunities for students and professionals alike. Whether you are just starting out in your career or looking to expand your network and skills, SAE is a great place to start.
