Celebrating Womens' Equality Day - A Reflection from the Female Engineering Perspective

HITORIC TIMELINE

On August 26th, 1920, women across the United States took a step closer towards equality with the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment prohibited the states and federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United Sates on the basis of sex. 50 years later, August 26th, 1970, the Women’s Strike for Equality was in full swing, a rally that was created by the National Organization for Women to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Amendments adoption but also advocated for other goals. These goals include, but were not limited to, political rights for women and social equality in relationships.

During the two years following this strike, women did not stop fighting for their rights to equality, and in 1973 President Richard Nixion designated August 26th to be “Women’s Rights Day” which was approved by Congress and changed to Women’s Equality Day. Today on August 26th, 2023, we are celebrating 100 years since the official adoption of Women’s Equality Day.

WOMEN'S GROWTH IN STEM

Women’s Equality Day is a day that allows women across the United States to look back on our history, fight and determination and be proud. This however does not mean that our fight is over.

Everyday women across the country break new glass ceilings and climb higher while fighting harder to show their strength. Women in STEM are a perfect example of this, and here within SAE, diversity is something that we strive to accomplish for all those who the term diversity encompasses. While we still have a way to go, we are continuously innovating and growing in ways that not only assists our members for their futures but also pay tribute to the women who fought to get us to where we are now.

One way SAE accomplishes this goal is by introducing each new generation of women to the world of STEM. This is done with events such school days, where collegiate teams, SAE professional members visit local schools to teach its students about STEM and the mobility industry. Programs like this allow young children to explore options they may not normally see. Thanks to programs like this, as of January 30th, 2023, women make up 35% of the STEM workforce, with 12.3 million women in STEM jobs according to The National Science Foundationn. We want to thank all the amazing women in SAE, STEM and around the Untied States for everything they do and show our never-ending support. Never stop fighting and working hard.

QUOTES FROM WOMEN IN OUR SECTION

“One thing I have always loved about STEM is the way it allows you to be creative and then see those ideas come to life. Being involve in SAE has given me more opportunities to this through their student challenges and other learning opportunities. It is so empowering to me to see other women in STEM, to have people I can look up to, and people I can ask questions without feeling like an imposter in the field. I know I can empower other women in the same way, telling them that they belong here, and if STEM is their passion, then go for it! They have our full support!”
        - Anna Gibson

“[SAE] has provided more than just engineering knowledge and experience or a future career; I have found family here ... people I can rely on and friendships that I know will remain with me forever.”

- Mia Hernandez

“The morale and collaborative nature [in SAE] are what motivated me to keep working hard and continually learning.”
        - Priyanka Sharma

“Being able to build strong relationships with the amazing women on my team and forming a sense of comradery gives me the ability to operate at my best. Although I did not have much experience in the field as of last year, I am always learning something new through SAE and my teammates.”

- Annabelle Smith

“At first, I was kind of scared of what reactions I would receive being transgender. It honestly feels like a large group of friends working together to achieve something rather than a group project.”

- CeCe Lagula

“Throughout my time [in SAE], I have had the pleasure of meeting many great people who share a passion and dedication to making [it] the best it can be.”
       - Teo Taveres
